Today the problem is not minor. Corruption is rife, President Alvaro Colom, has created an entity of government "social cohesion" and "Mi Familia Progresa" allocation of several hundred –some journalists say thousands- of millions of Quetzales -currency- his wife, director of the program, administered arbitrarily. There is no accountability for the use of public money in this entity. The excuse to avoid red tape and expedite the process as they would otherwise delay the use of these resources in social work “necessary to help the poor”. The amount of public funds allocated to the office of the president's wife is more than any budget of any government secretariat. According to the Free Press newspaper publishes information about the funds is at odds with data from the Ministry of Finance of the government.
The brother of the wife’s president –lawyer- claimed 24 million Quetzales -three million U.S. dollars- for legal advice to the Ministry of Education, with the backing of the leader of the state teachers' union. Unprecedented collection of legal services in
Colom said, was politically social-democrat, in his cabinet officials are members of the armed group of former communist guerrillas, who participated in the armed conflict, in the performance as state officials have been incompetent. The journalist Hugo Arce, published an article in a national magazine, which revealed that the president's wife was involved in guerrilla activities under a pseudonym and that he had emotional ties with a former combatant. The wife of the president denied everything said by Arce and threatened to prosecute him for libel, days after, the journalist was found dead in a hotel room in
The level of insecurity is alarming, according to the newspaper “Prensa Libre” every day between 17 and 24 murders, not to mention extortion, kidnapping and robbery. The president Colom promised that in one single year a decrease in violence since the fight with "intelligence" happened. Unemployment is at its highest level. Companies have ceased operation. The President Colom through their congressmen constantly tries to raise taxes by all means, promised in elections would not do it.
Friends of President Alvaro Colom: Hugo Chávez, Evo Morales, Rafael Correa, Daniel Ortega, Manuel Zelaya, Cristina Fernández, Lula Da Silva, and the government of Cuba. Correction: My father, Hugo Arce, did not only link Sandra de Colom to the guerilla. He also linked her and her husband, Alvaro Colom (President of Guatemala) to organized crime, drug-trafficking, and money laundering. He was supposed to show up in court the day that he was found dead in a hotel room. At the hearing, he was prepared to show proof of everything he had written, but was unable to because he turned up dead. Alvaro Matus, the prosecutor in my father's case became a fugitive of justice and is now free on bail for obstruction of justice in other 2 major cases: Rivera (a Venezuelan Operative who worked closely with Ministerio de Gobernacion) and the assassination of 3 Salvadorenean diplomats. My sisters and I, with the help of our lawyer Karen Fischer, have sued Matus under various charges, including planting of evidence, manipulation of the scene of the crime, and others. The United Nation's mission in Guatemala (CICG) has been working closely with us in regards to my fathers assassination. The media derived the false story of my father's suicide because of Matus' false allegations to the press, despite complete lack of forensic evidence (i.e. the gun didn't belong to my father, no prints belonging to my father were found in the gun or in the room, someone else's blood was on the floor, etc). He ruled my father's death a suicide within a couple of hours of his death. The Guatemalan press is censored, and it has been an uphill battle for my family and I to try to bring the real story to light.
Here's a link to a magazine publication that touches on a bit of the evidence that was altered in my dad's case:
